Description 1
The Alaskan Malamute is believed to descend from the boreal wolf. The pure strain of Malamute would have become extinct if not for the efforts of a few determined breeders. 1
The Akita is one of three spitz-type dogs native to Japan. At one time, only the Japanese aristocracy was permitted to own the formidable hunter. The breed has changed little since the seventeenth century. 1
Known for their unusual curly coat, Devon Rexes are one of the most distinguished cat breeds. Not only they possess such a exquisite fur type, which can come in many different colors, these cats also have shorter and brittler whiskers. 1
Burmese cats not only have gorgeous glossy coats, but they are also very sociable and lively. With behavior akin to a puppy, they can even learn how to fetch and keep being playful even after they grow into adulthood. 1
One of the oldest and largest breeds in North America, the Maine Coon proudly holds the title of gentle giant of domestic cats. Despite the large frame and serious strong face features, Maine coons are quiet and kind with other cats and other domestic animals. 1
In the nineteenth century, the Affenpinscher was considered simply a wiry-haired miniature of the Jagdterrier, Over the years, however, other theories have clouded the picture. Some claim that the Affenpinscher is descended from the Griffon Bruxellois, while others protest is was the other way around - the Affenpinscher originating the Griffon Bruxellois line. In fact, both breeds could have descended from an extinct German Pinscher. 1
The roots of the Afghan, as most hounds, reach far into ancient times. Cave drawings dating back more than 4,000 years have been found in the Balkh region of north-western Afghanistan, showing dogs which closely resemble the breed known today. 1
The Airedale was developed around 1850 by cross-breeding the English Black and Tan Terrier (now extinct) with the Otterhound. From the former, it inherited excellent hearing and eyesight. To the latter it owes its keen nose, its strength, and its prowess as a swimmer. 1
With their mild demeanor and playful sociability, Ragdoll cats make for the ultimate lap pet. The breed receives it's name from the tendency of these cats to completely relax while being hold, flopping around akin to a rag doll. Not only they are very gentle and friendly, they are also very intelligent and can learn commands easily. 1
Excessive inbreeding very nearly wiped out the Anglo-Francais. But breeding with the English Foxhound subsequently fixed a healthy strain of hound noted for its speed, vitality, intelligence, and courage. 1
When Australian stockmen required a herding dog to help control the half-wild cattle and sheep, the set out to breed one. The process began in the 1830s when a stockman named Timmins crossed a Smithfield, a tough but noisy working breed, with a Dingo. The resulting Timmins Biter had the Dingo's silent ways but proved difficult to manage. A further cross with Collies enhanced tractability, but barking became a problem once more. Again, to improve temperament, Dalmation stock was introduced. TO further develop working ability, the Australian Kelpie was interbred. This final cross produced just the versatile canine the stockmen were searching for. Their creation, the Queensland Heeler, later renamed Australian Cattle Dog, possessed stamina, reliability, and uncanny intelligence. 1
No doubt the blood of the Dingo, as well as that of the smooth coated Collie, flows in the veins of the Kelpie. 1
A combination of British terrier stock-probably a mix of the Cairn, Dandie, Dinmont, Irish, Yorkshire, and Scottish terriers-resulted in this intrepid working dog. 1
The Basenji is a queer specimen indeed: It does not bark. Instead, it emits a sound resembling a yodel. Furthermore, it cleans itself like a cat and trots like a throughbred horse. 1
Timid and recluse, the Russian Blue is a type of cat who steers away from socializing but turns into a cuddle bug as soon as they're alone with their favorite person. They earn their name due to the gorgeous silver blue coat, paired with their emerald green eyes and muscular structure, these cats have quite the striking appearance. Independent and calm, this breed is good for solo families or seniors. 1
With a very svelte body and angular shapes, the Oriental Shorthair is one of the most exotic breed of cats. It's distinguishing triangular head and large ears has origins from selections of various Siamese cats with those traits. Oriental Shorthairs are very loyal, playful and also very chatty. 1
Originated from Thailand, Siamese cats' origins dating back to the 14th century. Very sociable and loyal, this breed of cat loves children and is the perfect addition to a family, they are also very playful. These cats are prone to meowing, as they like having all eyes on them. 1
The Basset Hound is sometimes said to be half a dog in height, but twice a dog in length. With its wrinkled forehead, and long, drooping ears, the breed is hard to resist. 1
The Beagle is a tireless hunter, excellent in the pursuit of both large and small game. At one point the breed was small enough to fit into the pocket of a hunting coat. 1
The elegant and powerful Beauceron is an ancient French breed that some call the 'king of sheep-dogs.' 1
With its pear-shaped head, its curly coat closely trimmed like a poodle's, and its off but not inelegant lines, this dog bears a clear resemblance to a lamb. 1
Bright and athletic, the Belgian Shepherd has excelled in police and war work. Used as a guard dog in bars, it never bothers customers; but once the establishment close for the night, intruders risk a vicious attack. 1
Rugged in appearance, of medium build, energetic yet dignified, this shaggy-haired sheep-dog has earned its reputation as a reliable worker. 1
The Tervuren, is a member of the Belgian Shepherd family of dog breeds, named after a village in Belgium. 1
With their big eyes, large ears and lack of hair, this unique cat can bring the aversion of some people. Sphynx cats exist due to a mutation in their gene, with all cats having alopecia. This breed tend to be very cuddly, and due to their lack of hair to keep warmth, they're very receptive to pet clothing. Although playful, they can be very clumsy. 1
The four types of Swiss Mountain Dog are beleived to have descended from the Tibetan Mastiff. 1
Since the fourteenth century, when it was brought to Europe from the Canary Islands, this playful powder-puff has charmed countless generations with its tricks and its lively, almost human expression. 1
This French hound was named after the small village in Poitou where the breed was developed a century ago. The present-day Billy was the result of a cross between a Ceris and a de Montemboeuf. 1
Very popular in Europe, the British Shorthair is sociable and amiable. Being the result of cross breeding between Persians, Russian Blues, and other cats, giving them a distinct robust shape and color, this breed was only officially recognized in 1967. 1
The Grand Blue de Gascogne is descended from Bloodhounds that were probably crossed with local hounds in Gascony. 1
Powerful and solid, the Bloodhound moves with great dignity. The head, with its wrinkled brow and distinctive jowls, its long ears and drooping eyes, resembles the Basset Hound's. 1
Primarily a working dog, the tough little Border Terrier is able to keep pace with a horse despite its small stature - it is no bigger than a Pug. 1
Tall, slender, haughty-looking-the Borzoi is a study in elegance and nobility. 1
Bred with the purpose of resembling a mini black panther, Bombay cats have beautiful shiny black fur and the most enchanting orange eyes. Despite their appearance resembling their feral look-alike, they are quite the opposite in temperament, being very affectionate and delicate, even with children. 1
With their beautiful reddish-brown coat, Abyssinians charm people with their gorgeous beauty, intelligence and sociability. Playful and energetic, the Abyssinian is a type of cat that will not leave your side. Since they are so social, they tend to become depressed if left alone for long periods of time. 1
A fairly recent type of breed, the Savannah cat is elongated and sleek. Being cross-bred between a domestic cat with the feral Serval, this hybrid cat's coat turned out short and with a beautiful spotted pattern. Although very loyal, this breed is not recommended for first time cat owners, as they are high maintenance and extremely energetic. Although being a cross breed, these cats can be fertile and bear offspring. 1
Big and with long luscious fur, the Norwegian Forest cat looks a bit on the savage side. Despite looking like a lynx, this breed is kind and calm. They tend to be quiet and independent, but they still love to play and to be near their family members. These cats are rumored to have boarded viking ships with the purpose of catching mice. Legend has it, Norwegian Forest cats were mountain climbing fairies and were strong enough to carry the Goddess Freya's carriages. 1
Very docile and calm, with their large faces and eyes, Persian cats charms children and adults alike. Although playful, this breed has low energy and tends to be laid-back than active. Due to selective breeding to attain certain physical characteristics, Persians tend to have delicate health, and their coats demand daily grooming, making them a high maintenance breed. 1
Siberian cats have a thick double coat and very robust bodies, making them very durable for extreme winters. They tend to be very active and adventurous, they are also very intelligent and receptive to leash walking. 1
With their round faces, large eyes, and droopy ears, Scottish Fold cats can make anyone melt with their innocent-looking face. Hailing from Scotland, this breed is not only cute, but also very docile and timid, making them good lap cats. Because of their folded ears, they may need extra grooming and develop some health issues. 1
The Boston Terrier was indeed born in Boston, but if one judges by looks it seems to be more Bulldog than terrier. 1
With its powerful body, its rough, disheveled coat, and its bushy eyebrows, beard, and moustache, the Bouvier des Flandres can seem intimidating to anyone unfamiliar with the breed. 1
This handsome athlete of the canine world - muscular, fiery, and determined - requires a sports-minded owner who enjoys long walks and will share the dog's great love of play, for the Boxer is one of the most active breeds in the world. 1
Ancestor of all European pointers, the breed itself was the product of a cross between an Egyptian coursing hound and an ancient Assyrian mastiff in the fifth century B.C. Over time, two sizes of the breed evolved. 1
The Braque d'Auvergne is a tireless, methodical hunter. 1
The breed originated in seventeenth-century France and may be descended from the Spanish Pointer. Some experts maintain, however, that its ancestor is the Bracco Italiano. 1
Similar to the Pointer both in silhouette and hunting ability, this is the most elegant of all French pointers. 1
With its coarse, rough coat, its distinctive beard and moustache, and its dark eyes hidden by tuffs of hair, the Briard is a handsome and rugged working dog. 1
This alert, intelligent dog is the smallest, best-known, and most popular of the French spaniels. 1
This awkward, oddly built beast with its enormous wrinkled head and distorted face was obviously never bred for beauty and symmetry. 1
To watch a sensitive French Bulldog romp with children or snuggle up quietly beside an elderly master, it is difficult to believe that its ancestors were battling with bulls in England as recently as 150 years ago. 1
The Bullmastiff's melancholy expression, enhanced by a black mask around its dark eyes, hides a spirited and intelligent character. 1
Once known as the gladiator of the canine world, the Bull Terrier is now regarded as a true gentleman. 1
This mischievous little companion dog with its shaggy, weather-resistant coat is one of the most popular of a group of terriers that originated in Scotland around five centuries ago. 1
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever's coat and color are two of its most distinctive characteristics. 1
A delightful teddy bear when a pup, the Chow Chow grows quickly into a powerful dog with a superb mane that gives it the look of a miniature lion. 1
A sturdy, low-slung body, square head, and heavy muzzle are characteristic of this dog. 1
Beneath the Cocker's air of sophistication lurks a real athlete that needs regular exercise. At home, the Cocker makes an ideal pet. 1
The English Cocker Spaniel is a tireless, enthusiastic hunter. 1
The Bearded Collie resembles the Old English Sheep-dog. 1
In 1860, Queen Victoria took a holiday at Balmoral Castle and, charmed by the breed, brought several Rough Collies back with her to Windsor Castle. 1
The Boarder Collie is bred as a sheepherder and is popular in Australia. 1
The Curly Coated Retriever is the oldest of the English retrievers. 1
Except for its longer legs, the Dachsbracke resembles its relative, the Dachshund. 1
The Drever is a cross-bred of Dachsbracke popular in Sweden. 1
